"At first, I wanted to be a movie star!" admits J.D. Robertson. "As I got older, I realized I wanted to be an actor."
As an only child, growing up in a small town in northern Illinois, there wasn't much of a difference. It was all about the magic. The magic of being someone different! The magic of living in a different time! The magic of wearing costumes! Anything was possible. It's like living a dream.
Soon enough, J.D. realized that there was much more to being a movie star. It meant things like training, and learning, and developing skills. And that's called acting.
Once in high school, J.D. decided to become an actor. A couple of plays and musicals later, she enrolled at Columbia College in Chicago. Several plays later, J.D. graduated with a B.F.A. in Theater.
It was at Columbia where J.D. took a slight turn that changed her direction a bit. It was in a Voiceover Workshop, taught by award-winning actress-director Gigi Buffington. Instead of the big stage, there was a tiny recording studio. Instead of projecting to the cheap seats, there were 30 or 60 seconds to perform. It wasn't like any acting she had done before, yet she was hooked.
"I instantly felt at home in the studio," remembers J.D. "I just felt like this was the place I was meant to be and this was the type of work I was meant to do."
She was pretty good at it, too. After veteran radio commercial producer/director David Lewis visited the Workshop and ran the students through their paces, he immediately hired J.D. for her first professional commercial voice acting job. And so it began...
Soon after graduation, J.D. was signed by one of Chicago's top commercial agents, Grossman & Jack Talent. And she continued to hone her skills through more intense training from the likes of respected voice actors Jeff Lupetin, Jenny Avery, and Kathy Keyes Bosco.
J.D.'s talent and voice quality allow her to play roles in a wide variety of age groups - from an excited teen to a weary mom. She can handle the comedy of a frazzled substitute teacher or the drama of an E.R. nurse. And, perhaps best of all, she has the versatility to handle just about any type of Announcer copy.
J.D. Robertson's childhood dream of becoming a movie star may never come true. But, she can certainly play one in your radio or television commercial.
